Mulligan suggested that sprains or injuries might cause a tiny "positional fault" in a joint, limiting physiological mobility. The methods were created to get around joints with modest biomechanical changes, sometimes known as "positional faults" or "tracking" issues. Normal joints have been made to allow for free but controlled movement while also minimizing the compressive forces produced by that movement. These features include the shape of the articular surfaces, the thickness of the cartilage, the orientation of the ligament and capsule fibers, and the direction of pull of the muscles and tendons. Typical proprioceptive feedback keeps this equilibrium in place. Any or all of the aforementioned parameters might change, which would change the joint position or tracking during motion and cause the patient to experience pain, stiffness, or weakness. Therefore, it seems natural that a therapist would try to realign the joint surfaces in the least invasive manner possible.
